Life can be found only in the present moment.

The past is gone, the future is not yet here,

and if we do not go back to ourselves

in the present moment, we cannot

be in touch with life.

 

Thich Nhat Hanh

 

“Live in the Now” was a hip phrase in the eighties.

As conveyed in the quote above by Thich Nhat Hanh,

Zen Buddhist Monk and popular author of You Are

Here, who has translated this key Buddhist concept,

which stresses the focus on the breath and clearing

the mind to live in the present moment. This has

been adopted by New Thought and has been

popularized worldwide by Eckhart Tolle in his

books The Power of Now and The New Earth.

 

The two Affirmative Thoughts offered below

remind us of the essential nature of being

now focused. 

 

  EMPTY CANVAS

 

Today is our day – it does not belong

    to the thoughts and worries of tomorrow

or next week – it does not belong

    to the could have been, 

the might have been,

    or the should have been of the past –

it belongs to us now – to cherish –

    to enjoy – to fully live.

 

Today is an empty canvas –

    let us come to it

with clean brushes and fresh paint.

 

Let us enjoy and live

    each moment robustly –

all out, thanking God

    for each breath along the way.

 CLEAR OUR MINDS

 

Today let us clear our minds of fears,

    worries, regrets, doubt or possible

Life exists in the present moment,

muddled for many of us by our mental

preoccupation with our wandering minds –

entrenched in a Psychic Entropy that

leaves us whirling in thoughts of mishap

and misfortune, trapped in a waking

nightmare. The way back, or better stated

as the way back to the present is through

our focus on mindfulness, staying connected

and aware of the here and now. This is

where life, love, God, our heaven on earth

resides, waiting for us to seize the present

opportunity.

 

THIS PRESENT OPPORTUNITY

 

Let us accept this moment now with total

heart and soul – fully alive and fresh

with the multitude of possibilities waiting

for each of us to gather our senses

and join in – immersing ourselves in

the joyous experience of living.

 

Let us embrace this moment now without

reservation or expectation, but instead

learn its dance, sing its tune, allowing it

to overtake our fears or concerns,

so we can frolic in its pure splendor –

drunk with the wine of God’s creation.

Today, let us let being “slow and thorough”

supersede our inclination to “rush and do fast,”

realizing that with a steady thoughtful progress

we enable the best results to form and surface –

to take careful shape and arrive perfect and

complete.

 

Today, let us approach our pending change

by being slow and thorough, considering each

alternative with careful and complete

introspection – airing its potential – trying

it on for size – mulling over its fit and

comfort.

 

Today, let us be slow and thorough, as we

approach each action, every task, careful

with our motions – savoring the activity

as we do the finished product, mindful

and aware of the pleasure of simple

thoughtful existence.

pivot – noun - the central point, or shaft

on which a mechanism turns or oscillates.

 

verb – (pivots, pivoting, pivoted) no object

turn on as if on a pivot. (pivot on) depend on.

 

Life pivots on the present moment; for every

moment we exist – every moment we live –

we are presented with, as the note below

conveys, a pivot point. I believe it is exactly

within this moment, this pivot point, where

God exists, where we actually exist, where

all consciousness exists.

 

We each must, on our own, recognize

the opportunity offered by these present

moment based pivot points, learning how

to maximize their utility and as the adroit

basketball player often accomplishes:

stop dribbling, set one foot firmly as

the pivot, and then, swivel to reposition

our future efforts for more effective and

positive living.

 

 

THIS MOMENT

 

With every moment we are presented

with an opportunity to be more,

to choose our own unique direction,

to interpret our existence, to perceive

our future and manifest its very essence,

to lay the ties and trestles of this momentum,

to alleviate our suffering, to flourish

even with our burdens in tow, to soar

through our real or imagined constraints,

manifesting our magnificence.

 

With every moment comes a point of choice,

to propel forward or shrink into the malaise

of our fears and concerns, to boldly say yes

to life and living, to hold our worthy vision

before us, and with each deliberate chisel

stroke give this vision life and vitality,

thinking it into worthy existence – creating

a more wholesome and flourishing reality.

 

With very moment an opportunity, a choice,

a personal, spiritual refinement, renewal –

a chance to peer within, to grasp our purpose,

our meaning, allowing its significance

to stoke our enthusiasm, summon our joy,

as our purpose aligns with our will – life

synchronized, harmonious, as God’s love

assists our efforts, preparing the way

to our rightful destiny.

Much of my spiritual life is spent listening,

and then it is occupied with interpreting

and understanding what is being conveyed.

At times, there appears to be a theme or

concept connecting what I am inspired to

write and record.

 

In late March, I received the Meditation

Guidance below titled New Ground.

 

NEW GROUND

 

We attach ourselves to the function of things,

to the sequence of things, to the process

followed, the ritual required, hoping

to find structure, concreteness, an order

where only fluid change exists – eternity,

where only impermanence abides; today

let us release our grasp and allow the fiction

of control to ease, moving toward looser,

more spontaneous paradigms; mindful,

aware, stretching each moment by truly

being in it, engaged and ultimately unscripted,

a free range being, without role, egoless,

forsaking the comfortable for new ground,

virgin, fertile - requiring the shedding

of repetitive being.

I rarely ever receive guidance that

is not in some way personal and related

to my life. When I received this guidance,

I was drowning in my own output, still

going strong writing my book Finding

God On The Train - Notes On Enlightenment –

with well over seven hundred pages, still

seeing no end in sight.

 

I needed to step back and seek new ground.

This new ground, if fully embraced, would

require a radical shift in my consciousness:

most notable; the desire for permanence;

the need for control, the ability to just let go –

and the most difficult, at least for me,

choosing spontaneity over preparation. 

 

Being spontaneous rather than prepared,

almost beyond by graduate business school

and professional conditioning to comprehend,

let alone actually do. My favorite phrase

underscores the challenge of this note

for me, to live -

 

“ultimately unscripted,

                  a free range being.”

 

The second offering below, Free The

Fireflies, is an inspired poem from

this past Sunday’s meditation.

 

FREE THE FIREFLIES

 

It is the ramifications of fierce expectations,

formed in off moments with fleeting desires

that limit and spoil our possibilities;

forever taking infinite possibility,

truncating it, squeezing it

into our preconceived containers,

our goal-directed edict, our years

of misguided conditioning –

like fireflies jarred

on a summer night,

these bits of magnificence

lose illumination and darken,

only to fade from existence

and our grasp.

Let us endeavor to shed our forethought,

expecting less of ourselves, others,

life itself -  learning to live, to be again.

 

POEM G. 4.30.2017

 

Again, a plea for more spontaneity,

as well as the elimination of expectation

and forethought, moving toward

the “shedding of repetitive being.”

Offering, for me, a rather radical

approach:

 

“expecting less of ourselves, others,

            and life itself.”

 

What I like most about these two notes,

is that they convey what has been the

spiritual wisdom of the ages for those

seeking enlightenment – expressed in

a more soul catching garb, difficult

for me to ignore or dismiss.    

 

In all of this, I was able to see a fresh

approach for my book with too many

pages: a series of three books instead

of one. More about this on the blog

No matter how challenging our present,

we must lift our sights from the physical

world and see through our spiritual eyes.

In order to progress, we must, even in

the face of great difficulty, find a way to

recognize, and to celebrate faithfully,

the foundation of splendor, which is,

quite possibly, when fully considered, 

the true gift of Christmas.

 

FOUNDATION OF SPLENDOR

 

Today let us celebrate what is right,

good, wholesome, and pure in our

lives – the foundation of splendor

supporting our very existence, bearing

the weight of the world when required,

providing a buoyant surface for our joy

and exclamation.

 

Let us celebrate the river of love in our

lives – a current so sincere and strong,

consisting of infinite manifestations

and formations – appearing in simple

gestures, solemn promises, and tender

moments of oneness.

 

So, as we celebrate this time, our time,

let us be fully aware of the gifts we

have been given, the opportunity

to journey through life together as

friends, lovers, parents, brothers, aunts,

siblings, guides, coaches, co-workers –

all kindred spirits alive in the vast

undertaking known as life.
